Atiku Reacts As Gov. Wike, Ortom, Makinde, Ikpeazu, Others Withdraw From PDP Presidential Campaign

The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has reacted to Wike’s camp’s decision to resign from the party’s presidential campaign council. While reacting to the unexpected decision of Wike’s group, Atiku has urged members to join hands in the mission of national building. In his statement;

“Let us join hands and continue on with the mission of nation building,” the presidential contender stated in a message issued to the public.

According to him,

“My attention was drawn to a news clip early this morning in which a number of very senior and powerful members of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), addressed the press and, among other things, declared that they are reiterating their earlier calls for immediate withdrawal from the Presidential Campaign Council that our party established to wisely plan the 2023 general election.

The individuals that spoke to the media must have had reasons for leaving the Presidential Campaign Council, though I won’t guess what they might be. Personally, I find this withdrawal to be extremely surprising considering that, according to party authorities, all states of the federation—aside from the PDP branch in Rivers State—submitted names of individuals they wanted to be included on the Presidential Campaign Council.

However, I must reaffirm what I have said numerous times in public and privately regarding requests for our national chairman’s resignation or removal from office: Dr. Iyorchia Ayu’s decision to step down from office is a personal one, and neither I nor anyone else should intervene.

However, in response to the demands for Dr. Ayu’s resignation, I will state that as a devoted democrat and staunch advocate of the rule of law and democratic principles, in addition to the fact that our party was founded, organized, and governed by law and our constitution, it is my unwavering conviction that everything we do in our party must be done in accordance with and conformity with the law and our constitution. The laws defining the grounds for such termination must be followed if Dr. Ayu’s office is to be dissolved. But as you all will recall, the precise legal power required to start this removal from office has already issued a vote of no confidence in him”, he stated.
