Falana Tackles Adejobi After He Said A Civilian Can't Retaliate If Slapped By A Policeman In Uniform

Human Rights Lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana has lambasted the Spokesman of the Nigerian Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi over a recent statement credited to him.

The Force Public Relations Officer on Saturday stirred up a lot of reactions among Nigerians after he disclosed on his Twitter handle that a civilian has no right to retaliate even if he is slapped by a policeman in Uniform.

While reacting to the statement credited to Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Femi Falana in a statement, said an assault on Nigerians attracts 25-year imprisonment as citizens are entitled to fundamental rights.

He cited the Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and Police Establishment Act 2020 and argued that police officers have been prohibited from subjecting Nigerians including criminal suspects to humiliating or inhumane treatment.

He said the penalty for assaulting a civilian is 25 years under the Anti Torture Act of 2017 adding that the victim may also sue for monetary compensation under the Anti Torture Act and the Constitution.
