The Nigerian journalist, Babajide Otitoju has reacted as Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja sentenced Chukwudume Evans to 21 years imprisonment. This came after he reportedly kidnapped one Sylvanus Hafia.
Babajide Otitoju while reacting to this, expressed how shocked he was when he discovered kidnapper Evans collected $420k in one operation. According to Babajide, the level of confidence kidnappers have is as a result of weak penalties in the country. He further cited a short story about a governor as he said from the video (4:30), “I remember a governor whose mother was kidnapped; his mother was kidnapped when he was a Lawmaker, as soon as he became governor, he signed death penalty for such an offense. Who feels it, knows it.
“I want you to note this that Evans has set a record in our country. He is the first kidnapper to collect ransom in Dollars. He collect $420,000 in one operation, and there are others that he collected huge Dollars from. Someone told me, they will tell you, your ransom is one million, we want it in dollars and you must not change the money in one location. They are so confident that nothing will happen to them while carrying out this huge transactions. The penalties need to be hard please”.
