Meet The Longest Serving Non-European Coach In The English Premier League

Several coaches have managed English Premier League (EPL) clubs since the tournament began in 1992. Most of the tacticians that served for long durations are Europeans. Only one non-European that managed more than two hundred EPL matches. Who is this coach and how did he achieve this milestone?

This manager is no other person than Mauricio Pochettino. This Argentine gaffer moved to the English top flight when he joined Southampton immediately Nigel Adkins was sacked on January 18, 2013. Pochettino took charge of his first EPL game three days later as the Saints hosted Everton at St Mary’s Stadium. The clash ended in a barren draw. The next match took him to Old Trafford where he lost 2-1 to Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. He only managed to win four out of his first sixteen matches in charge of the outfit.

His output in the following (2013/14) season was fairly better. He got 19 wins in 44 matches across all competitions for the Saints. The best outing was a 5-1 win over Barnsley in the second round of the FA Cup. The Argentine left the club at the end of the 2013/14 season to join Tottenham Hotspur.

Mauricio took the Lilywhites through 293 games claiming 160 wins in the process. His best season in England was the 2018/19 season when he took Spurs to the final of UEFA Champions League (UCL). Unfortunately, he lost the it to Liverpool. The following season, Pochettino could not replicate the success formula. He won only 5 out of his firt 17 games in the season. The run of loses prompted the club to sack and replace him with Jose Mourinho.

Before leaving the English Premiership, this manager had a couple of big wins. The biggest among them was the 7-0 win over Tranmere Rovers on January 4, 2019. Nine months after that, he suffered a 7-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the UCL.
