Reactions As PDP Chieftain, Lere Olayinka Shares Alleged Receipt Of 40 Bags Of Cement Bought In 1989

Reactions have begun trailing an unusual picture posted by a chieftain of the Ekiti State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and House of Reps aspirant, Lere Olayinka on his Facebook page a few hours ago.

In the Facebook post, a picture of a receipt for forty bags (2 metric tons) of cement which was purchased by a certain Mr. Moshood Ajayi for the total sum of N1,520 on the 5th of September, 1989, was shared by Mr. Olayinka.

A quick calculation shows that each bag was sold for a paltry sum of thirty-eight Naira in Nigeria in the late 80s, which is Indeed very cheap compared to what a bag is being sold for today (N4,200).

Quite interestingly, Mr. Olayinka’s post generated a flurry of reactions from his followers as many of them took to the comments section to share their thoughts on the picture.

While some persons argued that even such an amount of money was not easy to come by at the time due to low income from civil service, others, however, insisted that the picture was a reflection of how inflation has eaten deep into the Nigerian economy.
